There is a lot of places in Japan that you can go to do some hiking, but Mt. Takao is one of the most popular places to go and not just only for hiking. This mountain located in Hachiōji, Tokyo, is one of the most popular places and a tourist destination as famous as Mt. Fuji. There is so many events during the year that you will find yourself going back to Mt. Takao. At least that's my experience, I have been living in Japan one year and a half and I have been there already two times and this second time I had the chance to see a lot of places and temples that the first time I did not had the chance to see. That's why if you go during high season is a little bit difficult to see everything and enjoy it, that's why I recommend to go in low season to explore and another day for an event to experience the culture and traditions.
You can do it all in just one day, because this mountain is about 1965 feet high, which can be climbed easily during winter which is better because summer season temperatures can be too hot.

Mt. Takao is an hour outside Tokyo by train, and the train will take you just in front of the entrance, no need to worry to get lost or look for directions. If you choose to don't do the seven hiking trails then you will enjoy the view from the cable car or chairlift to the top straight to the Takaosan Yakuoin Yuuki-ji Temple, founded in 744.
In the top you will find food places to take a break enjoy some delicious ramen, sake or beer and stores if you like to buy some souvenirs.
The seven hiking trails is about 40 - 50 minutes, it will depends on how much stops you do, your speed and how many people are in front of you. To go down you can take the lift options or just walk in another climb route all the way down.
It does not matter the way you get to the top you will enjoy it every minute and the view is amazing, you can even see Mt. Fuji when you get to the top.
The cable car and lift are always crowded, buy your ticket before you join the lines and it takes about 15-20 minutes to get you to the top. The cost is about 480 Yen for adults with the round trip costing almost 900 Yen and children half-price. Along the way, some cameraman would snap your picture and you can purchase the photo, but No obligation to buy.
Good to know:
-The entrance is free cost.
-There is bathrooms located in different places.
-There is fountain water and vending machine in different spots.
-Experience the rituals and take your time to explore.
Hope this helps if you are looking to visit Mt. Takao.
