How to visit a Shrine:
In the big temples and sometimes the smallest one you will find a fountain near the entrance. Take one of the ladles provided, fill it with fresh water and rinse both hands. Some people transfer some water into the cupped hand, rinse their mouth and spit the water beside the fountain. Don't transfer the water directly from the ladler to your mouth.
This ritual is called Chozuya / Temizuya, people do this to “purify” themselves with water before going inside the Temple or Shrine.
In most temples shooting photos is allowed only in the temple grounds, inside it's forbidden. If you like to go inside the temples you may need to take off your shoes and your phone must be in silent mode.

And remember show respect and behave calmly.
